Choosing where to place your aquarium in your home is an important decision that should be carefully considered for several reasons covered here. Placement is a long-term decision and you should expect that the aquarium will be in it’s location for several years. Aquariums are also difficult to move or relocate, so making the right decision and appropriately preparing the surroundings will help you and your livestock avoid the effort and stress involved from needing to relocate because of a less than ideal location.
What Makes an Ideal Location?
- Water and moisture resistant environment
- Free from stray sunlight
- Away from high traffic or high activity locations
- Close proximity to power outlets
- Protected from environmental contaminants
- Away from loud music or other audible disturbances
- Located where associated aquarium noises and strong blue light won’t be a disturbance to you
Water and Moisture resistance
Aquarium maintenance can be a wet affair and plumbing problems or leaks can happen. You’ll want to avoid areas where water can degrade flooring. It’s also important to consider where spills might cause you or your family to slip and injure themselves. Avoid wood flooring or flooring that is extremely slippery when wet. Some protection can be added with a water resistant mat in front of or under the aquarium.
Stray Sunlight
Sunlight might seem like free lighting for your reef but it is problematic because it will encourage unwanted algae and cyanobacteria blooms. It will also interfere with your lighting schedule and can cause extra heat.
High Traffic Areas
Entryways and hallways may not be a good place for an aquarium due to increased traffic and the risk of someone bumping into it.
Power Considerations
You’ll want to choose an area with a close electrical outlet. It is also highly recommended to have GFCI protected outlets installed. Also consider the power draw of all of your equipment. If there is a risk you could exceed the standard 15amps of most electrical outlets you should consider having 20amp or higher circuit and wiring installed.
Environmental Contaminants
Consider the possibility of contaminating your water with household cleaners or cooking residue. Aerosols can settle on the surface of your water and cause problems. Avoid locations like kitchens and close proximity to bathrooms or other areas where heavy use of household cleaners can be a problem.
Loud Music and Sounds
Avoid areas where loud music might cause vibrations from low frequency sound. Aquarium inhabitants are sensitive to these vibrations and may become stressed.
Reef Aquariums can be Noisy and Bright
Consider locating your aquarium in an area where the associated noises won’t disturb you or your family. Reef tanks utilize additional equipment like skimmers that can make sometimes annoying noises. Be mindful that wherever you put your aquarium will probably be surrounded by a blue glow from the lighting needed to keep a healthy reef. Intense blue light is also generally bad for your eyes and your circadian rhythm. A canopy for your aquarium will help keep the reflections from shining on your ceiling as well.
